Bahrain’s Shiite clerics mark Ashura with Manama procession

Bahrain’s leading Shiite clerics took part in annual Ashura commemorations on Monday evening with their traditional march through the capital Manama.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s leading Shiite clerics took part in annual Ashura commemorations on Monday evening with their traditional march through the capital Manama.

Leading the charge was Bahrain’s Sayed Abdullah Al-Ghuraifi who walked alongside other senior Shiite religious figures.

The procession comes after more than 20 Shiite clerics had been summoned for questioning and harassed by Manama’s security services in the lead up to Ashura.

Rights groups accuse Manama of violating the religious freedoms of Bahrain’s Shiite community through its repeated clampdown against Ashura commemorations.

Ashura marks the climax of a 10-day mourning period during the Islamic lunar month of Muharram honoring the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).

On this day, millions of Shiite Muslims around the globe wear black clothing and hold mourning rituals in remembrance of the Imam, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
