AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement called on Manama to halt its “abhorrent sectarian behavior” as the regime stepped up its crackdown against annual Ashura commemorations.
Scores of Shiite religious figures were summoned and detained by Bahraini authorities throughout this week in connection with Ashura.
In a statement on Thursday, Al-Wefaq named nearly a dozen Shiite scholars that are said to have been ‘targeted’.
According to the opposition group, similar measures are employed by Manama every year with the intention to “prosecute [and] punish” Shiite religious figures.
Ashura is a major part of the Shiite religious calendar when communities around the globe mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
