AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini security services are continuing to detain Shiite religious figures as part of Manama’s intensifying Ashura crackdown.
At least five Shiite clerics and Ashura orators were reportedly summoned for questioning on Friday and two were later detained.
That brings the number of Shiite religious figures who were interrogated and harassed by authorities this week to more than 20.
Ashura is a 10-day mourning period during the Islamic lunar month of Muharram honoring the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
The annual commemorations in Bahrain are routinely marred by a clampdown against clerics over the content of their religious sermons as well as other members of the Shiite community who observe the occasion.
