AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini prison authorities are continuing to ban a long list of Shiite religious texts in detention facilities across the Bahrain in what activists labeled as “degrading treatment of political prisoners”.
The Bahrain Interfaith Center reported on Thursday that among the texts banned are books authored by the Iraq-based Shiite spiritual leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani.
According to the center’s Religious Freedom Unit, Bahraini detainees are being subjected to “harassment and intimidation” for merely practicing their faith.
The center called for restrictions on religious freedom to be lifted and for the thousands of prisoners to be permitted to receive books without any constraints.
Allegations of detainees being denied their right to practice their religion freely are commonplace in Bahraini prisons with many being routinely punished for marking Shiite religious occasions.
