Twenty Bahraini detainees thrown into solitary as authorities try to quell mass hunger strike

Police officers in full riot gear have reportedly raided one of the wards in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison as the kingdom’s authorities grapple with how to quell a mass hunger strike involving hundreds of inmates.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Police officers in full riot gear have reportedly raided one of the wards in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison as the kingdom’s authorities grapple with how to quell a mass hunger strike involving hundreds of inmates.

Bahraini activist Zainab Al-Khmees reported on Monday that at least 20 prisoners, accused of ‘inciting’ the hunger strike, were thrown into solitary confinement following the raid.

Other inmates were told to end their hunger strike or face water and air conditioning cuts – a punishing measure in a country where summer temperatures tend to exceed 48°C.

An estimated 600 detainees are currently on hunger strike in Bahrain’s Jaw and Dry Dock prisons protesting against degrading conditions and intensified ill treatment.

Activists from around the globe have taken to social media in a show of solidarity with the hunger strikers under the English-language hashtag #BahrainPrisonersStrike.
