AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A hunger strike at Bahrain’s Jaw Prison that started out with only 15 inmates has now expanded to include more than 190 other prisoners.
Activists are reporting that the number of Jaw detainees currently on hunger strike totals 210 with other inmates expected to join in the coming days.
The fifteen started their hunger strike on Thursday over alleged abuses they are subjected to at the facility’s so-called ‘isolation building’.
They are demanding to be returned to the prison’s general population as a condition for ending their hunger strike.
By Saturday, others joined the hunger strike in a show of solidarity with their fellow detainees.
Allegations of abuse in Bahraini prisons are widespread and include denying detainees access to health care, confiscating their belongings and even depriving them of drinking water.
