AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement is marking the Persian Gulf kingdom’s 48th Independence Day this year on a somber note.
In a statement on Tuesday, Al-Wefaq said that Bahrainis have not yet attained “real independence”.
“Bahrainis have no real role in the management of their country,” the statement reads.
“After nearly five decades, Bahrain is living in a reality under a totalitarian and authoritarian state that rules with fire and iron and its people are living the worst phase in history, subjected to injustice, imprisonment and oppression, ”Al-Wefaq added.
Independence Day is another point of contention in Bahrain as the regime in Manama does not celebrate the occasion.
Instead, it marks December 16 as National Day, coinciding with the exact date that the ruling Al-Khalifa clan ascended to the throne.
