AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jailed Bahraini Shiite cleric Sheikh Isa Al-Qaffas was reportedly assaulted for daring to stand up to a prison guard who was taunting inmates for mourning two young Bahrainis that were executed on Saturday.
Ali Al-Arab and Ahmed Al-Malali were put to death by firing squad despite international concerns that their convictions were based on confessions obtained through torture.
Activists reported on Monday that an officer at Bahrain’s Jaw Prison “threatened” inmates mourning Al-Arab and Al-Malali.
When Sheikh Al-Qaffas responded by saying, “I do not fear you”, he was punished.
The cleric is serving a 10-year prison sentence after being accused of forming the so-called Al-Basta Group.
Among those convicted in the case are the son of a Bahraini opposition figure Hussein Abdul Wahab, blogger Ali Al-Meraj and journalist Mahmoud Al-Jazeeri.
