AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim called on the Bahraini people to rise up against “injustice”.
In a statement on Wednesday, the cleric explained that the most “dangerous” form of injustice manifests itself through authoritarian rule.
“The ugliest and most dangerous injustice that most severely eradicates justice, eliminates security, disrupts life, obstructs growth, impoverishes people, spreads corruption, incites sedition and leads to a loss of rights is when a person, tribe or party appoints themselves as custodians of the people and trustees of their money, interests, sanctities, capabilities and their security to become a predator that loots their livelihoods and betrays their trust. […] He imposes himself as the absolute master who only sees people as slaves with no right to freedom,” the statement reads.
“This injustice cannot be tolerated,” Sheikh Qassim added. “The whole nation must raise its voice in the face of this injustice.”
Sheikh Qassim left Bahrain in June of last year as a result of his deteriorating health, which rights campaigners blame on months of house arrest and the deliberate deprivation of medical care.
After undergoing several surgeries in London, he traveled to Iraq in December before continuing onto Iran.
Sheikh Qassim, who is a central figure in Bahrain’s popular uprising, was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and spent the next two years confined to the northwestern Bahraini village of Diraz.
