AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): New allegations about the distribution of contaminated food to detainees in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison emerged on Tuesday.
Bahraini rights campaigner Zainab Al Khamees recounted a phone conversation she had with her jailed brother, Ali Al Khamees, who said that the food at Jaw is “inedible”.
According to the activist, her brother claims that detainees have one of two choices “either die of hunger or be poisoned by the food”.
Rights campaigners have repeatedly demanded action from Manama’s oversight bodies over the distribution of contaminated food in Bahraini prisons.
In May of this year, numerous political prisoners in Jaw experienced severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting after being given rotten food.
The mass food poisoning prompted calls for an investigation as Bahrain’s interior ministry denied the incident ever occurred.
