AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A number of Western delegates addressing the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday touched on the worsening human rights situation in Bahrain.
Speaking during the session’s General Debate, Denmark once again called for the release of Danish-Bahraini citizen Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja.
“We reiterate our call for the release of all arbitrarily detained persons in Bahrain, including the Danish-Bahraini citizen Mr. Al-Khawaja; a victim of torture who needs treatment and rehabilitation,” the Danish representative said.
Al-Khawaja was sentenced to life in prison by a military court following the brutal suppression of Bahrain’s pro-democracy protests in 2011.
For her part, Ireland’s representative in Geneva explicitly condemned Manama for denying Bahrainis their right to a fair trial and blasted restrictions on free expression in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic voiced its concerns over Manama’s use of the death penalty, which has become more frequent in recent years.
Manama ended a de facto seven-year moratorium on the death penalty in January 2017, when it executed three torture victims.
Rights campaigners have repeatedly accused the regime of handing out death sentences to defendants that were tortured and denied fair trials.
