Twitter blasts Bahrain’s social media clampdown

The social networking site Twitter has thrown its weight behind civil society groups and condemned Manama’s clampdown on online dissent.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The social networking site Twitter has thrown its weight behind civil society groups and condemned Manama’s clampdown on online dissent.

“We agree with civil society that recent government statements in #Bahrain about critical online posts will, if implemented, pose a significant risk to free expression and journalism,” Twitter warned in a post on Thursday.

Last week, the Bahraini interior ministry threatened social media users with ‘legal’ action for merely following accounts that share negative opinions about the state.

The announcement is part of a broader campaign designed to stamp out what senior Bahraini officials are describing as the “misuse of social media”.

Access Now, an international NGO dedicated to an open and free Internet, welcomed Twitter’s position on the matter, declaring that “no one should be liable to legal action for simply expressing their opinions or for following an account.”

For its part, Twitter also reminded users about its Twitter lists that enable them “to view a timeline of Tweets from specified accounts without having to follow them.”
