AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini journalist, Aqeel Swar, was summoned for questioning by Manama’s security services on Saturday after criticizing the kingdom’s interior ministry.
On Thursday, the ministry threatened social media users with ‘legal’ action for merely following accounts that Manama deems damaging.
Swar condemned the move on Twitter, describing it as “the worst thing issued since Bahrain became familiar with freedom of expression”.
“This terrorism is worse than any terrorism we know,” he wrote in a tweet. “Stop it, don’t force the people to despise the state.”
Recent weeks have seen top Bahraini officials vowing tougher punishments against what they describe as “misuse of social media”.
But rights campaigners are warning that Manama is intensifying efforts to silence any form of criticism online.
A number of Bahraini journalists have been harassed by authorities in recent months while critical voices outside the country have been accused “inciting sedition”.
