AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The family of Bahraini detainee and cancer survivor, Elias Al-Mulla, is alleging that the 27-year-old is once again being denied access to urgently needed medical treatment.
Al-Mulla who also suffers from osteoporosis – a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break – fractured his arm and wrist several months ago.
Doctors inserted intramedullary (IM) rods to align and stabilize the fractures.
However, following his transfer to Bahrain’s Salmaniya hospital on Tuesday, the detainee was examined by a doctor who reportedly expressed grave concern over the fact that the rods had not yet been removed.
The doctor warned that the delay in removing the IM rods could lead to infections and other complications.
The delay is allegedly the result of Al-Mulla being denied follow-up treatment for his injuries and worsening health condition.
Al-Mulla is serving a 15-year prison sentence on trumped-up charges. He was 21 years old and perfectly healthy at the time of his arrest in 2012.
Following years of abuse and torture, he was diagnosed with stage 3-colon cancer in 2015.
His tumor was removed in 2017, but Al-Mulla still requires extensive medical care.
