AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Manama’s top court upheld a February sentence against Bahraini female detainee Zakiya Issa Al-Barboury, who was slapped with a five-year-prison term and stripped of her citizenship.
Bahraini rights campaigner Ebtisam al-Saegh, who broke the news about Monday’s verdict on her Instagram account, described the conviction as ‘illegal’.
Al-Barboury was accused of terrorism-related offenses after being arbitrarily detained in May of last year.
Both Al-Barboury and her 19-year-old cousin Fatima Dawood Hassan were subjected to incommunicado detention for weeks following their arrest by Manama’s security forces.
Although both were initially charged with so-called ‘terrorism’, Fatima was eventually released.
