AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights is calling on Manama “to stop fabricating charges against human rights activists and journalists” after the regime leveled seemingly unfounded allegations this week against Bahrainis living exile.
SALAM’s own vice president and Berlin-based activist, Said Yousif Al Muhafdha, was accused by the Bahraini interior ministry of managing fake social media accounts “that tended to encourage sedition and harm civil peace”.
In a statement on Friday, SALAM expressed deep concern over Manama’s “systematic suppression of the freedom of opinion and expression in general and against users of social networking sites in particular”.
Another Bahraini activist, Hassan Abdulnabi (Al Sitri), as well as Bahraini journalist, Adel Marzouq, were also named by the interior ministry for allegedly “inciting sedition”.
This as top Bahraini officials demanded ‘firm legal action’ against individuals sharing online content that Manama deems damaging.
On Wednesday, the heads of Bahrain’s five parliamentary committees met to discuss amendments to existing legislation with the aim of imposing tougher punishments against the “misuse of social media”.
For its part SALAM urged Manama to amend “criminal legislation that shrinks freedom of expression, freedom of the media and the fight against impunity.”
