AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Washington-based Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) marked the two-year anniversary of the deadly Diraz raid, which left five Bahrainis dead, by reiterating calls for an independent investigation into the incident.
Manama’s security forces attacked a peaceful sit-in outside the home of Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim on the morning of May 23, 2017.
Aside from those killed, hundreds were detained, and Sheikh Qassim was placed under house arrest.
“Two years later and no one had been held accountable for the violent and deadly events,” said ADHRB’s Executive Director Husain Abdulla.
“The Bahraini government has spearheaded a culture of impunity for officials who perpetrate human rights violations, and the fact that five people were killed and no one has been held responsible just goes to show how strong this impunity culture truly is,” he added.
ADHRB also demanded that Manama overturn the sentences of 167 defendants, who were convicted in a mass trial in February of this year over their alleged links to the sit-in.
They were slapped with sentences ranging from six months to ten years behind bars.
“It should be the Bahraini authorities going to trial and being sentenced to prison terms, not those exercising their right to peaceful assembly,” Abdulla said.
