Alwadaei echoes UN’s concerns over Bahrainis facing imminent execution

The head of the London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, echoed concerns expressed by UN experts on Tuesday over the fate of two Bahraini death row inmates, Ahmed Al-Mullali and Ali Hakim Al-Arab.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The head of the London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, echoed concerns expressed by UN experts on Tuesday over the fate of two Bahraini death row inmates, Ahmed Al-Mullali and Ali Hakim Al-Arab.

Alwadaei said that the two “have been subjected to appalling acts of torture and a deeply flawed trial.”

“The use of confessions extracted under torture to condemn people to death has now become the norm in Bahrain,” he added.

Earlier, a UN panel called on Manama to “immediately halt the executions,” annul the death sentences and order a retrial in the case.

Al-Mullali and Al-Arab were among more than 50 Bahrainis convicted on terrorism-related charges over a January 2017 prison break.

They have now exhausted all legal remedies and their sentences have been passed onto the Bahraini monarch, Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, for ratification.

According to BIRD, nine Bahrainis are currently at risk of imminent execution.

The rights group also reported that since the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on May 5, Manama’s judiciary upheld 11 death sentences, “including nine for political related offences”.

“The worrying increase in death sentences in Bahrain betrays an appalling disregard for human life,” Alwadaei said.
