AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The London-based Bahrain Press Association is asking the US, UK and UN to pressure Manama into releasing Bahraini journalists and activists detained for covering anti-regime protests or exercising their right to free expression.
The NGO made the plea in its annual report published on Friday, which alleges that Manama is engaged in a “fierce war” against freedom of expression.
The report documents a total of 86 violations against media and press freedoms throughout 2018, which include an intensifying clampdown on social media users as well as preventing journalists from covering Bahrain’s recent parliamentary elections.
In the lead-up to November’s polls, the Bahraini opposition was completely barred from the political process.
According to the Association’s Director, Adel Marzooq, the latest figures leave “no room for doubt that freedom of expression is not tolerated in Bahrain.”
“Violations over the past year included 21 judicial verdicts; 32 interrogations, some of which involved torture; 24 arrests; as well as incidents of obstruction of work,” Marzooq was quoted as saying.
“The number of violations since the political crisis in early 2011 has increased to approximately 1527 cases,” he added.
