AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Rights campaigners are reiterating their calls for the release of Hajer Mansoor as she spends her third birthday behind bars in Bahrain’s Isa Town Prison.
Under the English-language hashtag #FreeHajer, Amnesty Bahrain and Index on Censorship took to Twitter, claiming that Mansoor was languishing in jail “on absurd fake charges, to punish her son-in-law for his human rights work”.
Her son-in-law, Sayed Ahmed AlWadaei, currently resides in London and is a vocal critic of Manama’s human rights record.
His wife and Hajer’s daughter, Duaa AlWadaei, wrote in an Independent op-ed on Tuesday that her mother “is not a criminal.”
“She has committed no crime. She has been imprisoned, along with my brother and cousin, in response to the human rights campaigning of my husband,” Duaa explains.
“The United Nations and several international human rights groups have condemned her incarceration as an act of reprisal,” she added. “I cannot explain the pain of knowing that my mother, the inspiring matriarch who showered love and kindness upon everyone she met, now languishes behind bars.”
Earlier this year, Mansoor had her three-year prison sentence upheld, which she received for allegedly planting a fake explosive device.
AlWadaei is also alleging that the 51-year-old is being denied desperately needed medical treatment while being subjected to other restrictions in detention.
