AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Manama’s High Criminal Court sentenced 27-year-old Ali Al-Showaikh to life imprisonment on Thursday and revoked his Bahraini citizenship.
Al-Showaikh, who was deported from the Netherlands and arrested upon arrival at the Bahrain International Airport in October of last year, was accused of aiding fugitives.
Prior to his deportation, Al-Showaikh had a valid passport and expressed his willingness to leave the Netherlands for any country other than Bahrain.
But Dutch authorities sent him back to Manama despite the fact that he was at risk of torture and persecution there.
According to Amnesty International, Al-Showaikh was interrogated by Manama’s security services for weeks without the presence of his attorney who was not informed of any developments in the case.
The rights group believes that the 27-year-old was subjected to torture before signing a pre-prepared confession.
