Bahrain’s Al-Wefaq blats Manama’s judiciary over Diraz sit-in verdicts

Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement accused Manama’s judiciary of convicting “innocent people” after a court handed down prison terms to 167 Bahrainis for their participation in the Diraz sit-in.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement accused Manama’s judiciary of convicting “innocent people” after a court handed down prison terms to 167 Bahrainis for their participation in the Diraz sit-in.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Al-Wefaq called on the world to wake up and take note of the human rights violation unfolding in Bahrain.

The defendants convicted earlier in the day received sentences ranging from one to ten years behind bars.

They were charged with assault, possessing Molotov cocktails, using violence against police, rioting and taking part in an illegal gathering.

The charges stem from their involvement in a round-the-clock sit-in near the home of the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim, which was attacked by Manama’s security forces in May 2017.

During the raid five unarmed protesters were killed, hundreds were arrested and Sheikh Qassim was placed under house.

Al-Wefaq blasted Bahrain’s justice system for not trying “the killers and criminals who killed five innocent, unarmed citizens and shot them with live rounds alive in cold blood.”
