AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A Manama court jailed a total of 167 Bahrainis over their involvement in a round-the-clock sit-in near the home of the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim, which was attacked by Manama’s security forces in May 2017.
The jail sentences handed down on Wednesday range from one to ten years behind bars.
The defendants in the case were charged with rioting and taking part in an illegal gathering.
The Diraz sit-in, which was organized in June 2016 after Manama arbitrarily stripped Sheikh Qassim of his Bahraini citizenship, came under repeated attacks by the kingdom’s security forces.
During the May 2017 raid, five unarmed protesters were killed, and Sheikh Qassim was placed under house.
The ailing cleric has since left the country to receive medical treatment.
