AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s highest religious authority, Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim, accused the regime in Manama of launching an “all-out war against the [Bahraini] people”.
In a statement released on the eight anniversary of the country’s popular uprising this Thursday, Sheikh Qassim said that the turmoil in the kingdom would not end “until a new kind of relationship is established between the two sides – the people and the government.”
He identified “political exclusion” as the core of the crisis and warned that there would not be any real reforms in the country without “effective political participation that the people deserve and which is constitutionally guaranteed.”
“Any government is a servant of the moral and material interests of the people. Otherwise it loses its raison d’être,” the statement adds.
Thursday marked eight years since tens of thousands of Bahrainis took to the streets to demand democratic reforms and the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa clan.
The pro-democracy movement has been met with brute force from Manama, which killed over 100 people and jailed thousands in the ensuing crackdown.
