AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini female detainee Zakiya Issa Al-Barboury was slapped with a five-year-prison sentence on Wednesday and stripped of her citizenship.
Al-Barboury was accused of alleged ‘terrorism’ offenses after being arbitrarily detained in May of last year.
Both Al-Barboury and her 19-year-old cousin Fatima Dawood Hassan were subjected to incommunicado detention for weeks following their arrest by Manama’s security forces.
Although both were initially charged with ‘terrorism’, Fatima was eventually released.
However, Al-Barboury’s case was taken to trial, which dragged on for several months.
The London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) had strongly condemned the detention of the two women.
Shortly after their arrest, BIRD’s Director of Advocacy, Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, said that Al-Barboury and Hassan were “victims of a flawed system which is designed to wrongfully convict political dissidents by labeling them as a threat to the country.”
