AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim has sent his greetings to the Bahraini people “as they march on the path towards a great future.”
Sheikh Qassim applauded his nation as one of faith, dignity, knowledge and glory.
In his first statement in nearly three years, the cleric described Bahrainis as a people that “do not accept humiliation and submission.”
“Constant rights, justice and freedom are a permanent demand for this people. They will not forget it,” the statement penned in Iraq’s holly city of Najaf reads.
Sheikh Qassim, who is a central figure in Bahrain’s popular uprising, was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and confined to the northwestern Bahraini village of Diraz.
He departed Bahrain in June last year as a result of his deteriorating health, which rights campaigners blame on months of house arrest and the deliberate deprivation of medical care.
After undergoing several surgeries in London, he traveled to Iraq for the first time in five decades, visiting the country’s holy shrines.
