AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Two prominent Bahraini Shiite clerics were summoned for questioning by the kingdom’s authorities on Wednesday – a move the opposition Al-Wefaq group criticized as “great foolishness.”
One of them was Sheikh Mohammed Saleh Al-Rubaie, a leading scholar and religious figure. The reasons for the summons or the nature of any allegations against him remain unknown.
Earlier in the day, another Shiite cleric, Sayed Majeed Al Meshaal, was also asked to appear for questioning before being released afterwards. The summons came less than 24 hours after Al Meshaal completed a two and a half year prison term.
Al Meshaal once chaired the now-dissolved Islamic Scholars Council – one of Bahrain’s leading Shiite religious institutions.
He was arrested in July 2016 for participating in a round-the-clock vigil around the home of Bahrain’s highest religious authority, Sheikh Isa Qassim.
