AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s jailed human rights defender Nabeel Rajab was named by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the “most influential people in the world” for 2018.
Rajab made the cut as part of the magazine’s 10th annual special edition of Global Thinkers.
According to FP’s Editor in Chief, Jonathan Tepperman, the list is made up of “the thinkers and doers who had a profound impact on the planet in the last 12 months.”
The magazine describes Rajab as having “played a leading role in Bahrain’s 2011 pro-democracy uprising but has been imprisoned for several years for dissent.”
Late last year, Manama’s top court upheld Rajab’s five-year prison sentence over tweets criticizing the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s treatment of prisoners.
FP describes the verdict as a “draconian ruling” that has been condemned by human rights campaigners worldwide.
Rajab has been in detention since the summer of 2016. He was initially sentenced to a two-year prison term over television interviews.
