AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini detainee Naji Fateel is back in solitary confinement following the release of a recorded telephone conversation between him and rights campaigner Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei.
Alwadaei reported on his Twitter page on Saturday that the latest measures against Fateel are an act of retaliation by authorities in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison.
Fateel, who has been on hunger strike for the last two months, told Alwadaei this week that the prison administration had failed “to meet [his] basic demands, including full access to medical care”.
“My health is worsening,” he added. “I suffer from cramps and face other serious [health] complications. I am appealing to the international human rights community as a whole to immediately take action and prevent my health from deteriorating further.”
Shortly after Alwadaei shared that recording on social media, the US congressional human rights commission reiterated calls for Fateel’s immediate release.
“Naji Fateel is a prisoner of conscience and should be released immediately and unconditionally,” the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission tweeted on Friday.
In November of last year, Fateel was thrown into solitary for releasing a separate audio recording in which he alleged torture and other abuses in detention.
The human rights defender is serving a 15-year prison sentence on charges of establishing “a group for the purpose of disabling the constitution”.
