AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Former Bahraini opposition MP Ali Al-Asheeri received a one-month prison sentence on Wednesday after being found guilty of ‘misusing a telephone’.
The charges stem from his November tweets in which he declared his boycott of Bahrain’s parliamentary elections.
The former lawmaker was also slapped with more than a USD 1,300 in fines.
He was initially detained in November as part of Manama’s clampdown on any form of criticism of the polls before being freed on bail.
The elections went ahead without the participation of Bahrain’s opposition groups, which were barred from the political process.
