AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A former parliamentarian with Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement walked out of prison on Thursday after spending a whole year behind bars.
Sheikh Hamza al-Diri was jailed last January over his alleged participation in a peaceful sit-in in Bahrain’s Diraz.
The sit-in, outside the home of Bahrain’s highest religious authority Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim, was violently broken up by the kingdom’s security forces in May 2017.
Al-Diri was among a handful of opposition figures and rights campaigners that were later jailed for allegedly taking part in the protest.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of the Al-Wefaq leadership, including its Secretary-General Sheikh Ali Salman, has been imprisoned in recent years.
