AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Three Bahraini rights groups condemned the latest court ruling against Nabeel Rajab and called for his immediate release.
In a joint statement released on Friday, the Bahrain Forum for Human Rights, the Gulf Institute for Democracy and Human Rights and Salam for Democracy and Human Rights allege that Rajab is a victim of “an unfair trial that did not respect judicial impartiality.”
“The Bahraini courts used arbitrary laws that criminalize freedom of expression,” the statement added. “The targeting of Nabeel Rajab takes place in the context of the systematic targeting of human rights defenders and civil society in Bahrain.”
Rajab, a leading Bahraini human rights defender, was jailed in the summer of 2016.
On Monday, Bahrain’s top court rejected Rajab’s appeal and upheld his five-year prison sentence over tweets criticizing the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s treatment of prisoners.
He had previously been sentenced to a separate two-year prison term over television interviews he gave in 2015 and 2016.
