AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Amnesty International is urging Manama to free Ali Mohamed al-Showaikh “unless he is promptly charged before a court with a recognizable criminal offence, in accordance with international law and standards.”
Al-Showaikh was deported from the Netherlands and arrested upon arrival at the Bahrain International Airport in October of last year.
According to Amnesty, he spent the next ten weeks being accused of terrorism-related offenses by the public prosecutor’s office while his attorney was not informed of the numerous interrogations, transfers or any other developments in his case.
The rights group believes that he was subjected to torture before signing a confession.
Amnesty also wants Bahraini authorities to grant Al-Showaikh “immediate and unimpeded access to his lawyer and adequate facilities to prepare a defense.”
Prior to his deportation, Al-Showaikh had a valid passport and expressed his willingness to leave the Netherlands for any country other than Bahrain. But Dutch authorities sent him back to Manama despite the fact that he was at risk of torture and persecution there.
