Taliban confirms visit to Iran on Afghan peace

Taliban in a statement on Tuesday said that the group has visited Tehran on issues around peace and security in Afghanistan.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Taliban in a statement on Tuesday said that the group has visited Tehran on issues around peace and security in Afghanistan.

The statement said the Taliban delegation was sent to Tehran to discuss peace and security among other issues related to Afghanistan and the region.

“The delegation visited Tehran to share Taliban’s views on ‘post-occupation’ scenario and establishment of peace and security in Afghanistan and the region with Iranian officials,” Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for Taliban, said in a statement.

The statement said Taliban delegation often travels to neighboring countries and the region to discuss ways to achieve stability in Afghanistan.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said on Monday that Taliban representatives from Afghanistan arrived in Tehran on Sunday and started peace negotiations with Iran.

The talks are designed to set parameters for negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government, Iranian media reported.

“A Taliban delegation was in Tehran yesterday (Sunday). They had comprehensive negotiations with the Iranian deputy foreign minister,” Ghasemi said in a news conference aired live on state television on Monday.
