Bahrain's Al-Wefaq calls on supporters to take part in #FreeNabeel Twitter campaign

Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement is calling on supporters to take part in a planned Twitter campaign demanding the release of Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement is calling on supporters to take part in a planned Twitter campaign demanding the release of Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab.

Rajab is due to appear before Manama’s top court on December 31 for an appeal ruling on his 5-year prison sentence.

The Twitter campaign is being spearheaded by the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and is due to commence on Saturday evening under the hashtag #FreeNabeel.

Rajab was arrested in the summer of 2016 and initially sentenced to two years in prison over television interviews.

Meanwhile, his 5-year sentence is the result of a February conviction and stems from his tweets criticizing the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s notoriously brutal treatment of prisoners.

In the years since his arrest, Western governments, the United Nations and a long list of international rights groups have repeatedly called for Rajab’s unconditional release, arguing that his imprisonment is ‘unlawful’.
