AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Activists are reporting that refugee Bahraini footballer Hakeem Al-Araibi is now on hunger strike as an act of protest against “the unfair court decision to arrest him”.
The chair of the Persian Gulf Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, Yahya Al Hadid, who broke the news through his Twitter page earlier on Friday, also said that the footballer has been transferred to prison.
Al-Araibi, an Australian-based refugee, was officially placed under arrest by a Bangkok court on Friday and now awaits an extradition hearing that could result in him being sent back to Bahrain where he faces persecution and torture.
He was detained at Manama’s request last week after entering Thailand for a holiday with his wife over what Al-Araibi calls fabricated charges.
Also on Friday, Amnesty International reiterated calls for Al-Araibi’s release, mobilizing its network of supporters to urge Thai authorities to allow the footballer to return to Australia and “under no circumstances remove him to Bahrain.”
