AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): While recognizing the invaluable contribution of Bahraini women to their society, Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement pointed out that the regime in Manama jailed nearly 1000 women since 2011.
Marking the occasion of Bahrain Women’s Day on Saturday, Al-Wefaq stated that women in the kingdom are increasingly vulnerable to brutal torture, intimidation and arrest.
The opposition group pointed to the more recent examples involving the warrantless arrest of three sisters from the Bahraini village of Diraz and the jailing of the mother of two, Zainab Maki.
Maki became only the second woman to be stripped of her Bahraini citizenship after being convicted on terrorism charges this week along with her husband.
The case of the Makis is all the more troubling because of the two young children that they leave behind.
According to Al-Wefaq, the case also underscores the scale of the ‘crimes committed by the regime against the rights of women’.
