AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Former Bahraini opposition MP Ali Al-Asheeri has reportedly been freed on bail after appearing in court on Tuesday over a tweet declaring his boycott of Bahrain’s parliamentary elections.
Al-Asheeri was charged last week with ‘misusing a telephone’, and the case was referred to trial.
His tweet on November 13 merely stated that he and his family were not going to take part in the polls as he is a “Bahraini citizen deprived of [his] political and civil rights.”
The first round of voting for the lower house of Bahrain’s parliament was held on Saturday without the participation of the opposition, which has been barred from the political process.
Manama has also jailed top opposition leaders and rights campaigners in recent years.
The validity of the vote has been dismissed by numerous Western lawmakers and activists who described the polls as a ‘farce’.
