AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s top religious scholars made the case for the boycott of the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections, arguing that the level of repression is worse than it has been in years.
A statement released on Friday notes that both the Bahraini opposition and religious authorities abstained from boycotting the polls between 2002 and 2010 for the sake of unity.
All that changed when Manama launched its bloody clampdown on pro-democracy protests in 2011.
According to the scholars, the regime’s “tyranny against the people” carried on throughout the following years, leading to the boycott of the 2014 elections.
“All those boycotting are prepared to change the position from boycotting to participation if there is … a real opportunity to bring about a parliamentary council that represents the will of the people,” the statement adds.
