AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): On the occasion of this year’s Universal Children’s Day, SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights singled out Manama for continuing to violate children’s rights.
According to the group’s Vice President Said Yousif Almuhafdah, Bahraini children are “subjected to widespread and systematic human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, torture, sexual harassment, denial of education and the deprivation of many basic rights guaranteed constitutionally and internationally.”
The rights group alleges that hundreds of Bahraini minors are currently lingering behind bars after being slapped with politically motivated charges and having their confessions extracted under torture.
Moreover, SALAM points out that some of the children born to parents jailed by Manama for their political views or human rights work are being deprived of a Bahraini citizenship.
Calling on the regime to stop using children in “political conflicts”, SALAM also urged the kingdom to fulfill its obligations under international treaties including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child that Bahrain is a signatory to.
