Jailed Bahraini Shiite cleric Sheikh denied medical treatment

Jailed Bahraini religious leader Sheikh Mirza al-Mahrous is reportedly being denied access to medical treatment for a colon illness.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jailed Bahraini religious leader Sheikh Mirza al-Mahrous is reportedly being denied access to medical treatment for a colon illness.

Bahraini activists are reporting that authorities in the country’s Jaw Prison are depraving the ailing cleric of his medication, causing him severe intestinal bleeding.

Sheikh al-Mahrous is among a group of opposition leaders, rights activists, bloggers and Shiite clerics arrested in connection with their role in the February 2011 pro-democracy protests.

The group became known as the Bahrain 13.

Prior to his arrest Sheikh al-Mahrous was the vice president of Al-Zahraa Society of Orphans.

Manama’s courts found him guilty of ‘attempting to overthrow the regime’ and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

His time in detention has been marred by sexual harassment, beatings and other forms of torture.

Other members of the Bahrain 13 are victims of similar forms of ill-treatment and almost all are routinely denied access to health care.
