AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A former Bahraini MP with the opposition Al-Wefaq movement was placed under arrest on Tuesday after being summoned for questioning by Manama’s public prosecutor.
Ali Al-Asheeri’s arrest comes just days after he declared that he was boycotting Bahrain’s upcoming parliamentary elections on his Twitter account.
Al-Asheeri wrote that he and his family were not going to take part in the polls as he is a “Bahraini citizen deprived of [his] political and civil rights.”
Bahrain’s opposition members have been completely barred from the political process in the lead up to the November 24 vote.
Al-Asheeri, who resigned his post in Bahrain’s parliament, has been frequently harassed by authorities over the years.
In April, he was sentenced to six months in prison for taking part in an ‘illegal gathering’ but was freed on bail.
