Bahrain’s Sheikh Ali Salman sentenced to life in prison

Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman has been sentenced to life in prison after Manama’s appeals court overturned his acquittal on charges of collaborating with Qatar “with the purpose of overthrowing the regime”.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman has been sentenced to life in prison after Manama’s appeals court overturned his acquittal on charges of collaborating with Qatar “with the purpose of overthrowing the regime”.

Two other defendants in the case Hassan Ali Juma Sultan and Ali Mahdi Ali Al-Aswad – leading Bahraini opposition figures – were tried in absentia and received the same sentence.

The charges in the case stemmed from an open and well-documented mediation attempt during Bahrain’s 2011 pro-democracy protests, which was encouraged by Washington.

The initiative eventually resulted in preliminary communications between the regime in Manama, the Bahraini opposition and Qatar, which was acting as a mediator.

In June, Sheikh Salman and his co-defendants were initially cleared of any wrongdoing but that ruling was quickly challenged by Bahrain’s Attorney General Osama Al–Awfi.

Sheikh Salman was jailed in December 2014 and is currently serving out the reminder of his 4-year prison term for “inciting disobedience and hatred”.
