No security threat for Arbaeen pilgrims: Iraqi official

An official in Iraq’s province of Karbala said there are no security threats for pilgrims during the Arbaeen season.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): An official in Iraq’s province of Karbala said there are no security threats for pilgrims during the Arbaeen season.

Sindis Omran, member of the provincial council, said the province, especially its western areas, are fully secure and there is no danger threatening Arabeen pilgrims.

He added that a meeting is going to be held in Karbala on Wednesday to review security arrangements for the occasion.

Omran also said air coverage by military jets will be important for ensuring security of the pilgrims.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

Arbaeen falls on Tuesday, October 30, this year.

The Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group has made attempts to target Arbaeen pilgrims in recent years.
