AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jailed Bahraini opposition leader Hassan Mushaima met his granddaughter for the first time on Thursday after being denied family visits for nearly two years.
The visit was reportedly organized by the UK embassy in Manama following a weeks-long hunger strike and protest by Mushaima’s son, Ali, in London.
Ali later tweeted that he was not sure of the visit was a one-off or if it meant that his father would be “treated with greater respect” from now on.
“What we know is that, if anything, his [Mushaima’s] access to medication & books has worsened,” Ali added in his Twitter post.
The 70-year-old Mushaima is serving a life sentence over his role in Bahrain’s 2011 pro-democracy protests. He is a cancer survivor and suffers from multiple health conditions including diabetes.
