Three Bahraini Shiite clerics jailed during Ashura clampdown remanded in custody

Three Bahraini Shiite clerics jailed during Manama’s clampdown on annual Ashura commemorations have been remanded in custody.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Three Bahraini Shiite clerics jailed during Manama’s clampdown on annual Ashura commemorations have been remanded in custody.

Sheikh Hani al-Banna, Sheikh Yassin al-Jamri and Sheikh Majid al-Sahlawi had their detention extended for an additional 15 days over allegations that they were involved in ‘inciting hatred against the regime’.

The accusations against the three, who have already spent weeks in police custody, reportedly relate to the content of their religious sermons.

This year’s Ashura commemorations – a 10-day mourning period during the Islamic lunar month of Muharram honoring the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) – saw over a dozen Bahraini Shiite religious figures interrogated or detained.
