AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Leading Bahraini Shiite cleric Sayed Abdullah Al-Ghuraifi called on Manama to release all those that were detained in connection with this year’s Ashura commemorations.
Speaking during a sermon at Manama’s Imam al-Sadiq Mosque on Thursday evening, Sayed Al-Ghuraifi also insisted that the annual commemorations must not be politicized.
“One of the most important goals of the Ashura season is the production of peace, moderation and tolerance,” he said. “Any deviation from the target is a deviation from the [Ashura] season.”
Ashura, which was marked on September 20, is the culmination of a 10-day mourning period during the Islamic lunar month of Muharram.
It is a major part of the religious calendar for Shiite communities for whom it represents a solemn occasion to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
This year saw dozens of Bahrainis, including Shiite religious figures, summoned or detained by the kingdom’s authorities.
