AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini photojournalist Hussein Habeel was freed on Sunday after serving a 5-year prison sentence.
The 26-year-old was charged with ‘inciting hatred against the regime’ over his alleged links to the opposition February 14 Youth Coalition, which the Manama regime classifies as a terrorist organization.
According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), more than a dozen journalists and citizen-journalists are still detained in Bahrain for broaching sensitive subjects.
In April, the Paris-based NGO ranked Bahrain 166th out of 180 countries in its World Press Freedom Index, accusing Manama of “holding journalists who reported information that the authorities would have preferred to suppress”.
