Bahrain’s Sheikh Ali Salman back in court

Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman was back in court on Wednesday as the kingdom’s prosecutors seek to challenge his acquittal on espionage charges.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman was back in court on Wednesday as the kingdom’s prosecutors seek to challenge his acquittal on espionage charges.

The next hearing has been scheduled for September 26.

In June of this year, Sheikh Salman was cleared of “spying for the state of Qatar” – a move that infuriated Bahrain’s Attorney General Osama Al–Awfi who described the ruling as being “inconsistent with the truth”.

The charges in the case stemmed from an open and well-documented mediation attempt during Bahrain’s 2011 pro-democracy protests, which was encouraged by Washington.

The initiative eventually resulted in preliminary communications between the regime in Manama, the Bahraini opposition and Qatar, which was acting as a potential mediator.

The appeal comes despite the fact that the prosecution’s case was widely discredited throughout the last trial.

Sheikh Salman was initially jailed in December 2014 and later charged with inciting hatred against the regime. Amnesty International and other rights groups classify him as a prisoner of conscience.
