AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s Mohammad Khatim was reportedly hospitalized on Monday just over a week into his hunger strike.
Khatim was arrested in late August for a second time in less then two months for staging a peaceful protest over discriminatory employment practices against Bahrain’s Shiite majority.
His protest has also thrown the spotlight on broader economic issues in the kingdom.
Since then, Khatim’s detention has been extended over allegations that he was ‘inciting hatred against the regime’.
Prior to his arrest, the father of four shared a series of videos on his Twitter page appearing in front of a number of government buildings in Manama and holding up a handwritten sign addressed to the Bahraini monarch that read ‘I can not support myself and my family’.
Formally an employee at Bahrain’s Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Khatim alleges that he was wrongfully terminated.
